A Car Key Is Three Things Pretending To Be One
Understanding that explains every price and every timeline in this trade.
A modern car key is a mechanical blade, a transponder chip, and usually a radio transmitter. All three have to be right before the car will let you in and start, and each of them is a separate job with a separate cost.
The blade is the metal part. It can be a simple edge-cut key, or a laser-cut “sidewinder” with a milled channel down the middle, which needs a much more expensive machine to cut. The transponder is a chip with no battery of its own; when you turn the ignition, a coil around the barrel energises it, it answers with a code, and the immobiliser compares that code against what it has stored. The transmitter is the remote — and on a proximity key it is broadcasting all the time.
This is why a hardware-store copy of your car key opens the door, turns in the ignition, and goes precisely nowhere. The blade was copied. The chip was not.

What A Dealership Does Differently
We are not going to tell you dealers are useless. For some vehicles, particularly very new models and a few manufacturers with tightly locked-down security systems, the dealer genuinely is the right or only option, and we will say so on the phone rather than driving out to find out.
For the large majority of vehicles on King Township roads, though, the difference is mostly logistics and margin. A dealership generally wants the car brought in, which on an all-keys-lost situation means a tow. It quotes parts at list price. And it schedules you into a service department that may be booked out for days.

Why We Ask For Paperwork Before We Touch The Car
An automotive locksmith who does not ask for proof of ownership is one who will happily make a key to your car for somebody else. The check protects you far more than it inconveniences you.
What we need is straightforward: the vehicle registration or ownership document, and photo ID in the same name. If the registration is inside the locked car — which happens constantly — we can often work with insurance documents, a matching address on your ID, or a registered owner who can confirm by phone.
For farm and company vehicles, we need somebody with authority over the fleet, not simply the person who normally drives it. It is a two-minute conversation on the phone, not a doorstep argument.

A weak fob battery gets blamed on the car for months. It is usually a two-dollar cell and thirty seconds of work.

Most proximity-key vehicles have a mechanical key hidden in the fob and a lock cylinder under a cap on the driver’s door. Find yours before the battery dies.
Relay Theft: Why Keyless Cars Vanish From Driveways
A proximity key broadcasts continuously. Thieves working in pairs use a relay device: one stands near the house picking up the key’s signal through a wall, the other stands at the car retransmitting it. The car believes the key is present, unlocks, and starts. It takes seconds and makes almost no noise.
The defences are simple and cheap. Keep keys away from the front of the house — not on a hall table beside the door. Use a signal-blocking pouch or a metal tin at night. Many vehicles have a motion-sensing sleep mode in the fob that can be enabled. And a steering lock, however old-fashioned it looks, still defeats the entire attack because it is mechanical.
Long driveways and detached garages — which describes a great many King Township properties — make this easier for a thief, not harder. There is nobody passing to notice.

Can you make a key with no original?

How long does it take?
A duplicate with a working key is usually under half an hour. An all-keys-lost job is commonly one to two hours depending on the vehicle.
Is a locksmith cheaper than the dealer?
Usually, and often significantly, because there is no tow and no list-price parts markup. For a small number of models the dealer is the right route and we will tell you that instead of driving out.
My key turns but the car will not start. Is that the key?
Often yes — the transponder or its aerial ring. It can also be the immobiliser or something unrelated. We can test whether the key is being read, which quickly narrows it down.
Can you erase keys that were stolen?
Yes, and you should insist on it. Adding a new key without deleting the old ones leaves working keys in circulation.
Do you do tractor and equipment keys?
